THE DAFFO CRISIS
The people of Daffo community in Bokkos Local Government Area have been thrown into deep
humanitarian distress following a violent crisis that has repeatedly disrupted the peace and stability of the
area. What was once a calm and productive community has become a place marked by fear, loss, and
displacement.
The unfortunate series of events led to the widespread destruction of homes, farmlands, and sources of
livelihood. Many residents were forced to flee their ancestral homes in order to save their lives, leaving
behind everything they had worked for over the years. Women, children, and the elderly were the most
affected — escaping under harsh and unsafe conditions, often with little or nothing to carry along.
As a result of this displacement, many families are now living in temporary shelters or with relatives in
neighbouring communities, where access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, healthcare, and
proper sanitation is severely limited. Children have been forced out of school, increasing the risk of
long-term educational setbacks, while adults struggle with unemployment and the deep trauma caused by
the violence they witnessed.
SCENE 1 — THE LAND: WHERE LIVELIHOODS ONCE THRIVED
The Desitdown documentary crew arrived at the farmlands of Daffo — once fertile fields that sustained
entire families through generations of farming. Today, those same fields bear witness to the destruction of
the community’s way of life. Herds of cattle now roam through harvested and scorched farmland, a stark
visual symbol of the farmer-herder tensions that lie at the heart of the recurring violence.
Community members guided the crew through land that has been contested, raided, and left in ruin. The
rocky hillsides and dry earth tell a story of displacement — not just of people, but of purpose, identity, and
generational inheritance that cannot easily be rebuilt.

SCENE 2 — SURVIVOR TESTIMONIES: VOICES FROM A BROKEN COMMUNITY
At the heart of the Desitdown documentary are the survivors — those who lived through the attacks and
carry the weight of loss every day. The crew conducted on-camera interviews with multiple community
members, documenting their personal accounts of what happened and the years of suffering that followed.
A community elder, standing before the ruins of what were once solid brick homes, speaks with quiet
dignity about the night everything changed — the screams, the fires, the flight into darkness. His words
carry the calm that comes not from peace, but from years of learning to carry unbearable grief.
A second community member recounts the repeated cycles of violence — the 2018 incursions, the silent
killings of 2019 to 2022, and the devastating Christmas Eve attacks of 2023 that shattered any hope of
return. Standing beside the ruins of his home, his testimony is a record that must not be erased.

SCENE 3 — THE GRAVES: STANDING WHERE THE FALLEN LIE
The documentary crew visited the burial sites of those who were killed during the attacks on Daffo. A
woman stands alone beside the grave of a loved one — her red headwrap a vivid contrast against the dry
grass and rocky terrain. She does not speak for the camera; her presence says everything.
The modest, unmarked graves are a solemn reminder that beneath the soil lies an entire community’s
future — fathers, mothers, and children taken too soon. The overgrown land surrounding the burial sites
speaks to years of neglect and displacement, as families were unable to return to tend to their dead.

SCENE 4 — THE COMMUNITY: WITNESSES TO HISTORY
The documentary crew also captured the broader reality of life in Daffo — community members who
remain in the area, living in the shadow of recurring insecurity. Two men stand in an open field, their backs
to destroyed homesteads, cattle visible in the distance. They are not just interview subjects; they are
witnesses to history that the world has largely overlooked.
The Desitdown crew — travelling on motorbikes across the rugged terrain — documented the community
from within, spending time in the fields, the ruins, and the spaces where families once lived, farmed, and
raised their children. Their presence signals a commitment to telling this story with honesty, respect, and
solidarity.

IMPACT & SIGNIFICANCE
The Desitdown documentary on Daffo is more than a media production — it is an act of witness. In a world
where the news cycle moves fast and the crises of rural Nigeria are quickly buried by louder headlines,
Desitdown travelled to Bokkos LGA to ask: what is happening here, and what has become of the people
who remain?
The displacement in Daffo did not happen in isolation. It is the result of recurring cycles of violence that
have gone largely unaddressed — cycles that have robbed an entire community of their homes, their
harvests, their loved ones, and their children’s futures. By documenting these realities on camera,
Desitdown has created a permanent record of testimony — the kind that governments, humanitarian
organisations, and future generations must confront.
The situation in Daffo highlights the urgent need for humanitarian intervention, sustained peace-building
efforts, and long-term solutions. Government authorities, security agencies, and community leaders must
work together to ensure the safety of displaced people, provide relief materials, and facilitate the safe
return and resettlement of affected families. Most importantly, lasting peace must be restored to prevent
further suffering.
The people of Daffo deserve not only sympathy — they deserve concrete action that will help them rebuild
their lives, regain their dignity, and restore hope for a better future. The Desitdown documentary positions
itself as both a record and a call to action.
